The rather flat, nothingness acres of Indiana where Curt Willis grew up, left him feeling that there had to be something more. By age 12, he knew he wanted to write and create, but feared rejection should anyone, most especially his hard working, practical father, find out. Quietly, on the side, his mom would cheer him on to follow his dreams.
For a while, playing baseball from age 7 through college, helped to hold that inner desire at bay. In fact, receiving a scholarship to play ball in college, seemed to point out that his path to the professionals was paved out for him. While in college, Curt auditioned for a summer job at Dollywood in Tennessee and got it. So he spent his summer tied to a post in cowboy garb as part of a "shoot out" show for busloads of tourists.....and loved every minute of it. Summer over and back in school, this left handed pitcher suddenly sustained a serious injury to his shoulder and his hopes of playing professional baseball were ended.
Several times in the next few months, feeling the call of a creative life, Curt packed his bags to head to Los Angeles, but couldn’t find the guts to follow through and actually go....old insecurities kept popping up. Then, in 2004, someone said to Curt, "you can be a screenwriter anywhere...it doesn’t have to be LA". And as is Curt’s mode of operation, he spent several days thinking about that statement. Standing in the soup aisle of the grocery store, he was struck with an epiphany...exactly who and what he should write about...and immediately made a call. "Mom, I know what it is I’m going to do."
And so it is, that in 2007, Curt Willis has seen his first screenplay be made into a movie, and, if that isn’t enough....he’s starring in it. It’s about...what else...baseball. They say, "write what you know", and he did. The Wombats, is a very funny movie based on a real amateur baseball team, the Wombats. Curt is a natural on screen, and is already working on his next script. It seems the lying giant has been unleashed, and Curt is following his passion. We will definitely be hearing and seeing more from this handsome young actor/writer who transcended the plains of Indiana.....(and Mom is still cheering, only now on a set).
